The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government on Tuesday to explain its position on the violence that claimed on January 7 seven lives at Netai in the Lalgarh area of the State's Paschim Medinipur district.

At a hearing on a public interest litigation petition, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the incident at Netai, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice A.K. Roy directed the State Home Secretary to file the affidavit on behalf of the government by Thursday

The next date of hearing has been fixed for Friday.

The Bench directed the State government to explain its stand on the prayer seeking a CBI probe into the incident, whether it is agreeable to joint security operations to dismantle the armed camps which, it has been alleged, are set up in the region, and on the interim compensation to the next of kin of the dead and the injured as stated in the PIL by the Calcutta High Court Bar Association.
