Congress sweeps mayoral elections in Rajasthan

Continuing its running streak, the ruling Congress swept the mayoral elections in Rajasthan by wresting the Jaipur, Kota and Bikaner Municipal Corporations from BJP and reclaiming the post in Jodhpur on Thursday.

Jyoti Khandelwal of the Congress won the Mayor’s election in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) by defeating her BJP rival Suman Sharma by a margin of 13,500 votes. However, of the 77 wards in JMC, the BJP won 47, Congress 25 and five went to independents.

Ratna Jain of the Congress was elected Mayor in the Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC), defeating her BJP rival Aruna Agarwal by a margin of over 49,000 votes. Of the 60 wards in the KMC, the Congress won 42, BJP 8 and independents 8.

In Bikaner Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bhawani Shankar Sharma of the Congress defeated BJP’s Gopal Gehlot by a margin of 27601 votes. The Congress got 37 of the 60 wards while BJP managed 21 and independents 2.

Congress candidate Rameshwar Dadeech beat his BJP rival Prasan Chand by a margin of 34,772 votes in Jodhpur Municipal Corporation (JMC). While the Congress got 37 councillors elected, BJP got 22 while the independents won 6 of the 65 wards there.
