A delegation of West Bengal Congress MLAs, led by Pradesh Congress Committee president Manas Bhunia, met Governor M.K. Narayanan here on Friday and sought his intervention into alleged worsening of law and order situation in the State.
“The situation is volcanic. Marxist cadres are causing havoc across the State with illegal firearms. We asked the Governor to intervene and ask for a combing operation for the seizure of such arms. The Congress will fully cooperate in such an exercise,” Dr. Bhunia said, adding that although his party had repeatedly raised this demand in the Assembly, the CPI(M)-led Left Front government ignored it.
‘Discriminatory attitude'
Dr. Bhunia said he also raised the issue of “discriminatory attitude” of the State government in the Maoist affected Jangalmahal region where, he alleged, no other party other than the CPI(M) was given permission to hold political programmes.
“For the last one year since they started joint operations against Maoists, they have imposed Section 144 in the area and not allowed any political party to carry out political programmes such as rallies, processions or demonstrations,” he said.
The issue has attracted public attention after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee recently announced that she will hold a rally at Lalgarh on August 9.
Dr. Bhunia said Mr. Narayanan was also urged to speak to the State Government on the way in which the joint operations against Maoists were being carried out. The para-military forces were being rendered helpless as they were under the command of the State Police and the CPI(M), he said.
