Clerk held for bank fraud

A clerk of a nationalised bank was arrested on Friday for allegedly withdrawing money from a customer’s account using a forged (Automated Teller Machine) ATM card, police said.

Devdutt Malik, a clerk at a branch of the Punjab National Bank, was arrested after the customer Abdul Hashim, a resident of Sherpur village, lodged a complaint that Rs. 2.55 lakh was withdrawn from his account through the ATM card even though he had not applied for one, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajeev Malhotra told reporters here.

The role of the branch manager and other officials is also being investigated, the SP said. In another case, branch managers of two nationalised banks are being investigated for allegedly accepting and depositing fake notes in their banks, Malhotra added.
