Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday stressed the need to check population growth in the State.

“In a decade, population equivalent to that of Australia has been added to Madhya Pradesh,” Mr. Chouhan said after unfurling the tricolour at the Motilal Nehru Police Stadium here.

There is a need to check population growth for providing better education and health facilities, he said.

Stating that Madhya Pradesh was celebrating 2010 as family planning year, Mr. Chouhan called upon the people to save electricity and help the government in checking power theft.

He said that power generation has been enhanced by 3162 Mega Watt (MW) in last six years in the State and added that a target to generate 5000 MW more electricity has been set by 2013.

The country’s 64th Independence Day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm throughout Madhya Pradesh.
