A six-member team of the Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh-Kausar Bi murder case, has reached Surat for spot investigation.
Sources in the CBI said the team was looking into the Surat angle of the fake encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad because the then chief of the Anti-Terrorist Squad and prime accused, D.G. Vanzara, had claimed in the case diary that Sohrabuddin had come to Ahmedabad by road from Surat, presumably by the motorbike “found” near his body.
Vanzara had also claimed that a train ticket from Surat to Ahmedabad was found in Sohrabuddin's pocket. The entry was apparently made to justify the encounter and establish the claim that Sohrabuddin was indeed in police custody at the time of the encounter.
Claim on Surat stay
The CBI team would also be probing into the claim that Sohrabuddin and his wife, Kausarbi, were staying in Surat for sometime about seven months before the November 2005 encounter.
The CBI team had also been reportedly entrusted with the task of looking for the persons who were believed to be involved in making payments for Sohrabuddin's encounter killing.
