A memorial park and museum in memory of Indian soldiers and warriors of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War is being built at Chottakhola, a border village about 130 km from Agartala, by the Tripura government.
The forest department has been entrusted with work for the 20 hectare park which encompasses seven hillocks and a lake, state Forest minister, Jiten Chowdhury who hails from the area, told PTI.
A statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujiber Rehman would be set up in the park at Chottakhola in South Tripura which was a base for Mukti Joddhas from where they launched operations against the Pakistani army in Noakhali, Feni and in parts of Comilla districts of Bangladesh, he said.
A 52 feet tower would be constructed at the park from where parts of Noakhali and Feni districts in neighbouring Bangladesh would be visible.
A museum at the park would display arms and ammunition used in the war, old photographs and newspaper clippings.
Mr. Chowdhury said, “the park is just on the border and near the Trishna Wild Life sanctuary. We expect it will become a new address for tourists from our country as well from Bangladesh.”
Bangladesh Foreign minister Dipu Moni would lay the foundation stone of the Rs. 2.3 crore park on September 15, he said.
“During the Liberation War I joined the Mukti Joddhas after a short training and fought against the Pakistani army in the Comilla sector,” former deputy speaker and a prominent leader of the ruling CPI(M) Subol Rudra recalled.
Former Congress minister, Jawhar Saha said, “I was also a member of the Mukti Fauz. When the Indian army was combating the Pakistani army our duty was to attack the Rajakars or the collaborators of the Pakistani army.”
