The Army on Saturday intensified its rescue-and-relief efforts in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir as part of its Operation Megh Rahat. Nearly 300 columns are engaged in the effort and 1.4 lakh people have so far been rescued by the Army and the National Disaster Response Force. More than 42,000 people have been treated by the 96 Army medical teams working round-the-clock. A field hospital is being inducted to enhance medical assistance, a defence spokesman said.

Specialised engineering and communication equipment has been despatched for construction of bridges and restoration of communication links. The Army Aviation Corps and the Indian Air Force, along with Central paramilitary forces, are reaching out to the stranded people.
