A cache of arms, including a rocket launcher, was seized by the police at a village in Purulia district of West Bengal on Saturday.

The police said the seizure was made in the early hours after two suspected arms smugglers were arrested on July 24 at Jhalda.

“We have seized a rocket launcher, a rocket and an AK-47 rifle in Khatanga village,” Superintendent of Police Rupesh Kumar told The Hindu .

He said the weapons might be part of those dropped in Purulia in 1995. “However, we are not sure of it. We have contacted the Criminal Investigation Department, which investigated the case, before it was taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation,” he said.

The police raided Khatanga after Rathu Pramanik and Jamaluddin Ansari told them during interrogation that arms were stored in the village. At the time of their arrest, the police seized a sub-machine gun, two magazines and some cartridges.

On December 17, 1995, a large quantity of sophisticated arms was dropped from the Antonov-26 aircraft in the district.
