5 dead, 200 taken ill after gas tanker leak in Punjab

Five persons were killed and nearly 200 others fell ill after inhaling ammonia gas that leaked from a gas tanker got stuck under a flyover near here.

The accident occurred last night on the Delhi–Ludhiana highway when the tanker got stuck under a flyover along a canal, police said. Khanna SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill said that the accident was caused by the driver’s negligence. “The tanker got stuck and its valve was damaged, resulting in the leakage.,” he said.

Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Renu Chhatwal said, “Five persons died, while a total of 190 were admitted in various hospitals of the district.”

She said that around 110 people were still in hospital.

Four teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), from its nearest base in Bathinda, were deployed to “render safe” the tanker and the leakage. — PTI
