22 Indian nationals arrested in Nepal for betel nut smuggling

Twenty-two Indian nationals were arrested on Wednesday in separate incidents by the Nepal police for allegedly trying to smuggle 7,850 kg of betel nuts into India.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team detained 21 Indians while they were trying to smuggle 7,700 kg of betel nuts into India in Bhadrapur area in Jhapa district in eastern Nepal, according to an official at the Central Police News Room. The security personnel fired shots in the air to bring the situation under control after the smugglers attacked the police. The police are carrying out further investigation. Meanwhile, another Indian national identified as Shumru Namosudaru was arrested from Mechi Municipality while trying to smuggle 150 kg of betel nuts into India, police said. According to police, smuggling of betel nuts has been occurring frequently in the Indo-Nepal border area these days.
