20 feared drowned in U.P. boat tragedy

About 20 people are feared to have been drowned when the boat carrying them capsized in Saryu river in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The body of one of the deceased has been retrieved even as the local divers and the flood relief team of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been pressed into service in rescue operation.

According to a police spokesman, about 35 people were aboard the boat and the mishap occurred near the Ekhara Ghat under Khairi Ghat police station area in Bahraich district.

The ADG (Law and Order ), Brij Lal, said here that about 15 persons were rescued as the boat began to sink.

This is the second boat tragedy in the State within a fortnight. About 62 persons had perished in the Ganga when the boat in which they were going to attend a religious ceremony sank in the river in Ballia district last week.
