2 Dalit youths shot dead in U.P. over petty row

Two Dalit youths were shot dead by assailants allegedly belonging to the upper caste over a petty dispute in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday. Four persons have been arrested.

The incident in Mohiddinpur village under the Ghoorpur police station erupted over the payment of a mere Rs 4. A police spokesman said in Lucknow that the deceased had taken wheat for grinding to a flour mill owned by the assailants when a dispute erupted.

Following the row, the owners of the mill and their associates fired upon the two youths with their licensed weapons. Rahul (19) and Ashu alias Shubham (18), died on the spot, while Rajat Kumar, Vivek and Vikas were grievously injured in the firing, the spokesman said.

Suresh Kumar Dwivedi, Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi, Rakesh Kumar Dwivedi and Shani Dwivedi were arrested and one licensed DBBL gun, 10 live and 4 used cartridges were recovered, the spokesman added. Provincial Armed Constabulary and police personnel have been deployed in the village.
