: Last week, the older brother of Abdullah-bin-Kasem Mollah, also known as Abdullah Mollah, brought him some books when he came to see him at the Alipore Central Correctional Home. The 18-year-old student of the Polerhat High School in West Bengal’s Bhangar area is to appear for the higher secondary exam scheduled for March 2017.

Abdullah Mollah is among the 11 persons arrested after the Bhangar land agitation movement turned violent last month.

They have been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and denied bail. However, when the plight of this student was raised in the State Assembly, the government allowed him to write the exam on humanitarian grounds.

“Everyone will appear in the examination. These are humanitarian issues,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in the House.

She also said that the State’s Education Minister Partha Chatterjee would arrange for this.
