A 55-year-old man was assaulted by a mob on suspicion of being a child lifter in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district. The police also came under attack when they went to rescue the man.

“Three of our officials were injured when the mob threw stones at the police team which went to rescue the man. 14 persons have been arrested in the case so far,” said Ganesh Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police, Alipurduar.

The incident took place in Falakata town on Saturday afternoon when a section of locals noticed that the man was wandering around in the Khagenhat area of the town. Soon, they surrounded the man and started assaulting him. A few locals said the man was mentally challenged.

About two weeks back four women were allegedly assaulted by locals who suspected them of being child lifters in two separate incidents in Jalpaiguri district.
