117 ‘Maoists’ surrender

One hundred and seventeen persons with Maoist links, including 36 militias, surrendered before Malkangiri Superintendent of Police in Malkangiri district of Odisha on Monday, adding to the continuing surrenders in the district.

Those who surrendered on Monday were from Baragaon village of Kartanpalli panchayat under Mathili police station. They included Maoist militia commander Madhab Durua and Moga Sodi, the village committee president of the Naxalites in the area. Total number of surrenders of Maoist elements in the district has risen over 400 during past ten days. During last four days, 375 grassroot-level Maoist supporters from different remote villages of Mathili police station area.

All these persons were actively involved in violent activities of the Darbha division of the outlawed CPI(Maoist), said Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra. The surrendered included 34 women.

Kartanpalli panchayat is an extreme Naxalite-infested region.These recent surrenders would be a major blow to the Maoist support base in the area as they were providing logistic and other support to them.
