11 inmates escape from Hooghly destitute home

Eleven inmates of a destitute home at Uttarpara in the West Bengal’s Hooghly district who were rescued from Mumbai in November 2012, escaped on early Monday morning, police said.

“Senior officers of the department have reached the spot. I have directed the police to trace out the inmates,” State’s Minister for Women and Social Welfare, Sabitri Mitra, told The Hindu .

Ms. Mitra said that the inmates were trying to run away from the destitute home ever since they were brought at the home after being rescued from a red light area in Mumbai.

According to authorities at the destitute home, two of inmates were from Bangladesh and remaining from the State.
