Opposition leaders expressed concern about sporadic incidents of violence during processions on Sunday to mark Ram Navami in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal and also violence in the JNU campus over serving of non-vegetarian food on the festival.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi without mentioning any of the incidents directly, urged the country to stand together. “Hate, violence and exclusion are weakening our beloved country. The path to progress is paved with the bricks of brotherhood, peace and harmony. Let’s stand together to secure a just, inclusive India,” he tweeted.

RJD MP Manoj K. Jha in a direct reference to the incidents said that these incidents should serve as a last warning signal of an impending civil war.

“Violent images from across India on the pretext of ‘anything/everything’ should be the last warning signal for everyone that we’re in the closest vicinity of a possible ‘Civil War’ with Genocidal tenor. Nothing/Nobody shall survive! Only order shall vary. Scare should unite us all,” he said in a tweet.

CPI General Secretary D. Raja said that if this trend continues the nation will suffer. “Sangh Parivar outfits have become aggressive in imposing their agenda of hatred and violence. They have a great contempt for the diversity of our country and want to impose monolithic order. The violent incidents are a symptom of this affliction,” he added.
