Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took a swipe at the Opposition, saying he was “thankful” to rival parties for bringing a no-confidence motion against his government on July 20 as it allowed him to expose the “hollowness” of the Opposition’s claims of numbers and support.

He was addressing the first meeting of the BJP parliamentary party in the ongoing monsoon session. Briefing presspersons, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said Mr. Modi told party MPs that the Opposition’s move underscored its “political immaturity and lack of understanding and substance”.

The Prime Minister was felicitated by the parliamentary party for winning the confidence vote and the meeting saw several senior Ministers and party president Amit Shah address the gathering.

Mr. Shah, sources said, targeted the Opposition and said such a motion was brought when the government lost its majority or there was unrest in the country, not when there was a stable government in place, as was reflected by the numbers with 325 members supporting the government and 126 in the Opposition camp.

He said Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s act of hugging Mr. Modi was exposed as being stage-managed when he winked right after returning to his seat.
