A delegation of 10 Opposition parties met President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday and urged him to ensure that not a single Indian citizen is excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The delegation included Congress leader Anand Sharma, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, NCP’s Supriya Sule, CPI(M)’s Md. Salim, SP’s Ramgopal Yadav, TDP’s Y.S. Chowdary and AAP’s Sanjay Singh.

A memorandum submitted by the delegation accused the government of undermining the nation’s democratic and secular values. It said the government was spreading misleading statements against the Supreme Court on the NRC issue. “This NRC list has not even spared some brave soldiers, ex-Rashtrapatiji’s families, a former Chief Minister and other elected representatives and prominent members of the civil society,” the memorandum said.
