Soldier killed, two injured in cross-border firing in Rajouri district

There was a ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Sundarbani sector

One Indian Army soldier was killed and two others were injured in a fresh ceasefire violation by Pakistani army along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Pir Panjal’s Rajouri district on Monday. Meanwhile, a civilian was killed in Pulwama by unknown gunmen in fifth such attack ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in south Kashmir.

“Pakistani Army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation in Sunderbani Sector on Monday morning. In the incident, rifleman Karamjeet Singh was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries,”  said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Devender Anand.

The Army said it effectively replied to the Pakistan’s violation.

Deceased soldier Singh, 24, belonged to Punajb’s Moga district and is survived by his parents.

Officials said firing between Indian and Pakistani soldiers had stopped on Sunday evening around 7: 30 p.m. “However, Pakistan opened fresh fire around 5:30 a.m. on Monday and inflicted a casualty. It was 80th ceasefire violation in Jammu region in the past one week,” said an official.

Civilian killed by gunmen in Tral

Unknown gunmen shot dead a civilian in Pulwama’s Tral area on Monday evening.

It’s fifth such attack by unknown gunmen in south Kashmir ever since the Lok Sabha elections were declared for J&K.

According to the police, Mohsin Ahmad Wani, 25, son of Ghulam Ahmad Wani, was shot dead from close range outside his home at Tral’s Reshipora village. Wani, a labourer by profession, suffered bullet wounds and died on the way to a nearby hospital, the police said.

The Army, Special Operations Group of the Police and CRPF later cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to nab the attackers.

In the past two weeks, suspected militants killed an ex-soldier, a policewoman and a civilian in similar attacks. One National Conference leader was also left injured.
