The Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) P Iswara Bhat has assured the faculty members of the institute that the University has dissociated itself from Justice (retd) Asok Kumar Ganguly, who was a honorary faculty member at the institute.
“… the University has already dissociated from him (Justice Ganguly) . He will be distanced from the NUJS in whatever activities in future until the EC (Executive Council) decides the issue finally,” the Vice Chancellor said in response to the statement issued on December 25 by a majority of the faculty members urging NUJS authorities that the institution distance itself from the retired judge who has been accused by a law intern of sexual harassment.
Assuring swift action in this case, Prof. Bhat said, “I want to make it categorical that NUJS has zero tolerance for sexual harassment and its politicisation. We are committed to uphold the value of women's dignity. We disapprove politicisation and trivialisation”.
He told the faculty members that an “official communication will also be issued from the side of the NUJS to this effect at the earliest.”
On Wednesday, a statement issued by 12 faculty members said that since the former judge continues to remain an honorary professor at NUJS, they “request the NUJS administration to take immediate steps to see to it that necessary action is initiated against the former judge.”
The woman who has levelled the allegations against the retired judge is an alumni of NUJS.
