Unfazed by the growing demand for new states, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday said there was no need for a second States Reorganisation Commission. He asserted that the government was not neglecting these demands and that any “workable” demand would be considered.
Noting that there were demands for creating at least a dozen new states, Mr. Shinde said: “There is no need for [another] States Reorganisation Commission… but the government is not neglecting them [the demands]. We are ready to listen to them [agitators]. Wherever workable, the government will take a decision. We have done [so] in the past in Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and in Chhattisgarh.”
He denied the government had given any commitment on the creation of a Union territory for Gorkhas in Darjeeling.
