No need to inform Centre, says PDP on Alam release

March 10, 2015 02:56 am | Updated November 17, 2021 01:02 am IST - SRINAGAR:

As the political protest over the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam became louder on Monday, the PDP stood by its decision and said it did not intend to keep people in prison “unnecessarily”.

“There is a Supreme Court ruling on Mr. Alam saying we cannot keep him in prison on the same charges forever. It is as if everyone is telling us to invent charges to keep him in prison,” the PDP’s chief spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Nayeem Akhtar told The Hindu . “And we do not need to inform the Centre over releasing someone from prison just as we do not seek its approval when we arrest people,” he added.
