Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said party vice-president Rahul Gandhi will return soon.

Speaking to reporters at the end of a 60-km roadshow, Ms. Gandhi said, “He will reply to all your queries.”

She said the Congress stood firmly by the Land Acquisition Act passed by Parliament during the UPA regime and would not accept any change to it.

“There is nothing wrong in the law passed by our government. It was passed by Parliament with the support of all parties. Even the BJP supported it. There is no need to change it.”

She alleged that the NDA government wanted to change the law to benefit corporates.

“The amendments are in favour of big companies. They are against the interests of farmers. We will not support it.”

Expressing grief over the loss to the farmers, she urged the Union and the State governments to ensure that all those affected were paid compensation without bias.

“The farmers have suffered a lot, but no survey of the affected fields has been done, and no compensation has been given to them nor have they got any compensation,” she said.

“The Congress has always struggled for the welfare of farmers. We will continue to do so. We may not be at the helm in the Centre or in Madhya Pradesh to provide relief to them directly. But we will fight to ensure that all affected get their dues without bias,” she said.

Ms. Gandhi was accompanied by AICC general secretary in charge of Madhya Pradesh Mohan Prakash, AICC secretary Meenakshi Natarajan, and State Congress president Arun Yadav.
