No government can ensure zero crime, says U.P. Minister

‘Police can’t be in every nook and corner’

Amid huge criticism of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for failing to maintain law and order, a member of Yogi Adityanath Cabinet has said that no government can ensure zero crime.

“Police cannot be deployed in every nook and corner given the size and population of U.P.,” said Urban Development Minister Suresh Khanna during a tour of Ghaziabad on Thursday. He, however, promised that his government would not spare anyone found to be guilty.

‘No sheltering criminals’

While in the Opposition, the BJP had regularly criticised the previous Samajwadi Party for failing to control violent crimes. Mr. Khanna said his party’s “criticism of the previous government was that they gave patronage to those people who commit crimes.”

“Under our government, no official or party worker can give shelter to any criminal,” Mr. Khanna told journalists. His comments came in the wake of a gangrape-murder in Greater Noida, similar to the one witnessed on a highway in Bulandshahr last year, and the caste clashes in Saharanpur.
