The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to stop prying into Hadiya’s choice to marry Shafin Jahan.
The court was hearing an oral request by Mr. Jahan, married to Ms. Hadiya, a homoeopathy student in her mid-20s. Ms. Hadiya converted from Hinduism to Islam before marrying Mr. Jahan.
The NIA had argued that Ms. Hadiya was indoctrinated, radicalised and brainwashed. Both the NIA and Ms. Hadiya’s father, Asokan K.M., claimed that Mr. Jahan was a recruiter for radical groups.
“You can investigate any of the aspects, but you cannot investigate the marital aspect ... you cannot investigate whether she married a good person or a bad person. That’s her choice,” Chief Justice Dipak Misra observed.
