'Karunanidhi' in Parliament

The late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi has never been a Member of Parliament, but on Friday, MPs were surprised to 'see' him on the premises.

Telugu Desam Party member and actor Shivaprasad has been arriving at Parliament in various avatars. On Friday, he chose to dress up like Karunanidhi. He joined his fellow members in a protest demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh.

Ending days of speculation, V Senthil Balaji, former Transport Minister and key functionary of the TTV Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, on Friday joined the DMK in the presence of party president M.K. Stalin and other senior leaders. Mr. Balaji, who is one of the 18 disqualified AIADMK MLAs, hit out at the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, alleging that they were sacrificing the rights of the people of Tamil Nadu at the behest of the BJP.

The defending champions Chennaiyin FC will face Delhi Dynamos on December 15, 2018 in Chennai. Chennaiyin FC was not in good form this season having won only 1 match out of its 11 matches. Delhi Dynamos are languishing at the bottom of the table with no wins from its 11 matches so far.

Elephant rejuvenation camp

As many as 26 elephants from various temples and mutts from across the State were brought to Thekkampatti near Mettuppalayam on Thursday for the 48-day annual rejuvenation camp. The camp, organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE), will be inaugurated on December 14, 2018. The elephants, mahouts and cavadis, who accompanied the elephants, were welcomed to the camp by organisers.

Asian shares tumbled on Friday after China reported a set of weak data, fanning fresh worries of a sharp slowdown in the world's second-biggest economy and leaving investors fretting over the wider impact of a yet unresolved Sino-U.S. trade dispute. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.4 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei dropped 2.1 per cent. Mainland China's benchmark Shanghai Composite and the blue-chip CSI 300 declined 0.6 per cent and 0.9 per cent, respectively, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 1.6 per cent.

The suspected gunman who killed three people at a Christmas market in the French city of Strasbourg was shot dead on Thursday in a brief gun battle with police after being on the run for 48 hours, police sources said. Cherif Chekatt, 29, was killed in the Neudorf/Meinau area of the city shortly after a big police operation was launched around 2100 hrs (2000 GMT) on Thursday about 2 kilometres from where he launched his attack on Tuesday.

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat first in the second test against India at Perth Stadium on Friday. India, who won the first test in Adelaide to take a 1-0 lead in the four-test series, decided to field four seamers and no specialist spinner. The tourists were forced to make two changes to their team after injuries to batsman Rohit Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
