A two-member team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) was sent from New Delhi to Sonipat on Sunday to visit the family of the victim who was gang-raped and murdered in Haryana's Rohtak district.

The 23-year-old victim was abducted from Sonipat district on May 9, 2017, and later found murdered in Rohtak. Her mutilated body was found by a passer-by in the urban estate area of Rohtak district on May 11, 2017.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the case, NCW chairperson Lalita Kumaramanglam said that a two-member team had been sent to Sonipat on Sunday morning.

"There have been conflicting reports. The victim's brother told me on Saturday that the police are going slow as one of the men involved had ties to a policeman. The NCW team will meet the victim's family to find out the details," she said.

The chairperson added that she had written to Haryana authorities, including the State Home Minister and Director General of Police, reminding them of the need for "fair and swift" investigation, citing the Delhi Police's example in the Nirbhaya case.
