The National Commission for Women served notice on Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday for his “misogynistic and offensive” remarks in a speech critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At a rally of farmers in Jaipur, Mr. Gandhi attacked Mr. Modi for his absence from Parliament during the debate on the Rafale fighter jet deal. He said: “The watchman with a 56-inch chest ran away and told a woman, [Nirmala] Sitharamanji, ‘defend me. I won’t be able to defend myself, defend me’.”

“The remarks are extremely misogynistic, offensive and unethical and shows an extreme disrespect to the dignity and honour of women in general,” the NCW said in its notice, asking him for an explanation.

On the same day, Mr. Modi said Mr. Gandhi’s comments were an insult to the country’s women. BJP president Amit Shah said he owed an apology to all women for his “misogynistic” remarks.
