Modi remembers Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary and paid tributes to first Home Minister Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary.





“I join my fellow countrymen & women in remembering former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi on her Punya Tithi,” Mr. Modi tweeted.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards on this day in 1984.

Mr. Modi also paid tributes to Sardar Patel.





“I bow to Sardar Vallabhai Patel on his birth anniversary. Sardar Patel’s life is a journey of deep-rooted courage, dedication and service to the Motherland. He is truly the architect of Modern India,” the Prime Minister said in another tweet.

Leaders pay tributes

The nation on Friday remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary with President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and other leaders paying tributes to her.

Mr. Mukherjee, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid floral tributes at Shakti Sthal, the memorial of Indira Gandhi.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders Motilal Vora, M Veerappa Moily, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Ahmed Patel, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Digvijay Singh and Shakeel Ahmad also paid tributes to Indira Gandhi.

Several leaders from Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee were also present.

Devotional songs were played at the venue. A speech made by Gandhi was also played on the occasion.

People, who visited Shakti Sthal here, raised slogans in favour of Indira Gandhi.
