Reiterating that the murders of three members of a family at Jiaganj in Murshidabad prima facie had nothing to do with politics, West Bengal police on Friday said that it had detained two persons in connection with the crime.

“Investigation was started just after incident and 2 persons hv [have] bn [been] detained and are being examined,” West Bengal Police said in a tweet.

The murder of Bandu Gopal Pal, a supporter of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh who used to frequent the organizations weekly meeting, along with that of his wife Beauty and their eight-year-old son has sparked an outrage with Governor Jagdeep Dhankar describing it as “reflective of intolerance and worrisome law and order situation” of the State.

In a series of tweets, the police said that Mr. Pal was also working as an agent of “some insurance and chain companies and was in a serious financial crisis”. “A diary note found is suggesting serious differences in the family,” the police added.

The West Bengal police, which has also involved its Criminal Investigation Department with the investigation, said the family members of the deceased “have denied affiliation with any political group”. Prima facie it seems to be a case of “personal enmity and has nothing to do with politics,” the police added.

RSS State secretary Jishu Basu said on Thursday that Mr. Pal was a regular at the weekly meetings of the RSS.

Well-known filmmaker Aparna Sen took to social media, describing the incident as “shame” for the people of the State.
