Pradip Singh Birring, a British passport holder, and Jagdeep Kumar Sehgal -- two elusive former directors of Bharat Developers and Realtors Pvt Ltd, Mumbai -- arrested on Friday in a joint operation by the Goa and Mumbai Crime Branch at Vashi, were on Saturday remanded by a local Sessions Court to five days of police custody.
They were brought to Goa from Mumbai by the Goa police and produced before the court for remand.
The two proclaimed offenders had fled Goa after the collapse of their under-construction building, Ruby Residency, in Canacona in south Goa on January 4 last year that killed 31 workers and injured several other persons working at the site.
Meanwhile, the Crime Branch was ready to file a chargesheet before the Margao Sessions Court in the coming week in this case is now expected to take some more time with the new developments of arrest of the duo, confirmed Karthik Kashyap, Superintendent of Police, Goa Crime Branch on Saturday.
Interestingly, Birring was traced to Manchester until last week, as the Crime Branch was in regular contact with Interpol to extradite him to India, once the chargesheet was filed. Sehgal, on the other hand, was very much in the country and hiding in Mumbai.
The Crime Branch had already attached their property worth Rs.30 crore during the investigation.
The voluminous chargesheet against 11 accused, including nine government officials (three former Chief Executive Officers and three engineers of Canacona Municipality) comprises 2,600 pages including forensic reports and statements of 125-odd witnesses, said sources in the Goa Crime Branch on Saturday.
