'Padmavati' banned in poll-bound Gujarat

Poll-bound Gujarat on Wednesday banned the release of Hindi movie ‘Padmavati’. Madhya Pradesh banned the film a couple of days ago and there have been protests against the movie in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the government feared an adverse law and order situation if the movie is released.

“There are many issues. The movie hurts the feelings and sentiments of several communities, including the Rajput community, which has launched an agitation against the movie,” Mr. Rupani told journalists.

Till all controversies surrounding the movie ended, it would not be screened or released anywhere in the State. “We don’t want the controversial movie here. Necessary instructions have been issued to the State home department,” he said.

The government was of the firm view that “distortion of history and culture” would not be allowed and that the movie in its present form distorted history and also played with the feelings of several communities, he said.
