Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils a memorial for those who laid down their lives in national service at Heads of Missions Conference at Jawahar Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday.

In an acknowledgement of the efforts of foreign service officers in cultivating and protecting Indian interests abroad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled “Transformation", a memorial in commemoration of those Indian government officers and personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty while serving abroad.

The "Transformation” sculpture in Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, the premises of External Affairs Ministry has been converted into a memorial.

Mr. Modi and External Affairs Ministers Sushma Swaraj paid homage at the memorial after unveiling it.

The sculpture is an array of six installations representing the theme of “Transformation”. It comprises six sandstone stems of “Bird of Paradise” flower in various stages of unfurling.

The sculpture seeks to combine the age-old stone craft in the form of sandstone stems with the flowering of petals made of titanium, a contemporary material with subtle hues of colours.

The inscription on the Plaque in Sanskrit “mrithyormam amrithamgamaya” (Lead me from death to immortality) is part of a hymn from Brhadaranyaka Upanishad.

The memorial attains added significance as India is in the crossroads of a global diplomatic outreach to India as a growing economic and military power.

The sculpture was designed and constructed Prof. Jatin Bhatt and Prakash Vani.
