A day after BJP workers gave a rousing welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his return from the U.S., the Congress on Sunday said Mr. Modi’s meeting with President Donald Trump had “failed” to meet India’s expectations despite the display of bonhomie and friendship at the “Howdy Modi!” event.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said the “euphoria” over the Prime Minister’s UN visit was misplaced, and asked the government to focus on real issues and not deflect attention by engaging in “boastful campaign propaganda”.

He, however, said the Congress was in complete agreement with the stand taken by Mr. Modi on Pakistan and the continuing threat of terrorism, and added that “Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s language was unbecoming of a Prime Minister and has no place in a civilised discourse.”

“There were no tangible outcomes of the visit which would justify the BJP celebration. The Prime Minister was unsuccessful in persuading President Trump to restore the Generalized System of Preference for Indian exports to U.S. markets, withdrawal of reduction in number of H1-B visas for Indian professionals and the steep hike in fees,” he said.
