Ministers meet Pranab on land ordinance

January 02, 2015 01:51 am | Updated 01:51 am IST - New Delhi:

Three senior Union Ministers met President Pranab Mukherjee to explain the urgency in promulgating the ordinance amending the land acquisition Act before he gave his nod to it.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari met the President as he sought some clarification on the ordinance, sources said.

The Ministers informed the President about the need to promulgate the ordinance urgently because before January 1, Act should bring under its purview 13 central laws, including those relating to defence and national security, to provide higher compensation and rehabilitation and resettlement benefits to farmers whose land was being acquired. They cited Section 105 of the Act in this regard.

The President accorded his nod to the ordinance after meeting the Ministers. With the promulgation of the ordinance, the Act will be applicable to 13 existing central laws.
