Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is wanted in the Punjab National Bank fraud case , has taken refuge in Antigua, one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

Mr. Choksi was earlier in the United States. Before the law agencies could approach the authorities there, he flew out to the Caribbean nation. He is also alleged to have got a local passport.

His presence in Antigua was confirmed by the Interpol’s local office in response to a diffusion notice seeking his whereabouts.

The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have filed charge sheets against Mr. Choksi, following which the Interpol has also been requested to issue a Red Notice.

The ED has also invoked the Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance against him and his nephew, Nirav Modi.
