Mayawati to go it alone

‘We are open to talks, not to alliances with any party’

August 18, 2014 02:02 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:10 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Ignoring feelers from various political parties for forming a joint front against the BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati on Sunday ruled out an alliance with any party for the coming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

“We will contest on our own everywhere, with full preparation,” she declared at a press conference here.

Admitting that the Nationalist Congress Party had got in touch with the BSP for the Maharashtra polls, she said: “We are open to talks, not to forming alliances with any party whether it’s the NCP or the Congress.”

Recently, Ms. Mayawati had rejected an offer to form a front with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh (with the mediation of RJD chief Lalu Prasad) against the BJP, saying her “self-esteem came before power.”
