A Marathi film producer allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at a city hotel on Sunday.

Atul Tapkir, known for producing the film Dhol Taashe in 2015, posted a suicide note on Facebook before taking the extreme step.

In his note, Mr. Tapkir accused wife Priyanka and her family of mental and physical harassment after his movie flopped badly. Mr. Tapkir said he received no support from her and was separated from his children.

“For six months, I have been driven away from my home and my wife has refused access to my children....I am now joining my [deceased] mother,” reads the suicide note, in which Tapkir says his father and sisters stood by him.

The film was about the politicisation of the traditional ‘Dhol Tasha’ music-cum-cultural activity. It flopped badly after which Tapkir is believed to have incurred debts, which is said to have put a severe strain on his marital life.

Tapkir had been staying in a hotel in the Karve Road area for the past two days. The hotel staff summoned the police after he did not respond to calls.
