Maoists threaten Trinamool MP

November 18, 2011 01:54 am | Updated 01:54 am IST - KOLKATA:

The West Bengal leadership of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has, in an open letter, warned Trinamool Congress MP Subhendu Adhikari of “severe punishment” being meted out by “the people's court” for his recent remarks against the Maoists in the region.

Mr. Adhikari had, at a rally in the Belpahari area of Paschim Medinipur district on November 1, thrown an open challenge to the Maoists and warned that they would be driven out of the State.

In the letter dated November 15, the State Secretary of the CPI(Maoist), Akash condemned Mr. Adhikari's threats.

The Maoist leader said that making such threats, while keeping the joint security forces in tow was “an act of cowards and of fascists.” He pointed out that Mr. Adhikari's statements reflected “the desperate need of the Trinamool Congress to find some ground beneath its feet.”

“You may be getting Mamata's [Banerjee] blessings, but you will have to remember that the people's court will mete out the right punishments [to you],” the letter said.

Mr. Adhikari is in the forefront of the Trinamool Congress' campaign against the Maoists in the region and has even been criticised by the Left Wing extremists for taking such a stand.
