With the security of Supreme Court coming under focus after Delhi High Court blast, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday directed urgent steps to strengthen protective measures in the complex.
Dr. Singh asked Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid to call on Chief Justice of India S. H. Kapadia and take “urgent steps” to beef up security in Supreme Court complex, PMO sources said.
The Prime Minister’s directive comes two days after terrorists targeted the Delhi High Court, exploding a bomb which killed 13 people and injured over 80.
Dr. Singh’s directive also comes in the wake of an e-mail purportedly sent by Indian Mujahideen warning that Supreme Court will be their next target if their demand of commuting the death sentence awarded to Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru is not repealed.
Soon after Wednesday’s blast outside the High Court, Justice Kapadia had reviewed security arrangements in the Supreme Court, High Court and other subordinate courts in the capital.
He had also elicited views of Solicitor General Rohington Nariman and senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi on improving the security apparatus in the apex court.
Justice Kapadia was also of the view that there was a need to beef up the security of the courts.
Mr. Singhvi has suggested Parliament-type security for the top court complex.
