The Maharashtra government has sought the cooperation of the United States in the area of security in the wake of terror threats.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and senior officials here on Tuesday for an hour when she was briefed about the security measures taken post-26/11.
Needed: tech know-how
“To face the rising threat of terrorism and to strengthen internal security, there is a need for sharing technical know-how in the area of security,” Mr. Chavan said.
“We discussed various aspects of intelligence training, capacity-building and skill upgradation, wherever an association with the U.S. would be useful. While the Chief Minister expressed the intention for cooperation, he conveyed to the official that such matters were handled by the government of India,” a senior official said.
Coastal security, intelligence gathering, jungle warfare, training in counterinsurgency were among the topics discussed at the meeting.
Maharashtra is now planning to recruit and groom intelligence cadres through special training as against the old system of roping in officials from other arms of the State force.
