Amidst high drama West Bengal Transport and Sports Minister Madan Mitra was produced before a city court here on Saturday which remanded him in custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till December 16.

Though a battery of lawyers pleaded for Mr. Mitra’s bail the Magistrate in Charge Kingshuk Sadhukhan rejected the bail petition.

The CBI arrested the Minister on Friday and charged him with criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and deriving undue financial benefits from the saradha group. Pleading bail for Mr. Mitra, counsel Ashok Mukherjee argued that he was summoned by the CBI for questioning as a witness and thus he could not be arrested in such an arbitrary manner.
