Lt. General Dalbir Singh Suhag — against whom the new Army Chief General Bikram Singh had lifted the discipline and vigilance (DV) ban a week ago — has been promoted and appointed as the Eastern Army Commander based in Kolkata.

Lt. Gen. Suhag, 3 Corps Commander, will soon take over as the Eastern Army Commander, a post which till recently was held by General Bikram Singh, who took over as the Army Chief on June 1, Army sources said here on Friday. His promotion has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Former Army Chief General V. K. Singh had imposed DV ban on Lt-General Suhag and given a show-cause notice. General Bikram Singh reversed the decision of his predecessor within a week of his taking over as the Army Chief.

Lt. Gen. Suhag is in line to head the Army in 2014 after the retirement of General Bikram Singh.
