Koala charms Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a delightful Australian welcome when he was charmed by a cuddly koala bear during a break at the G20 summit here.

The koala was brought to the Prime Minister by officials at the backstage of the G20 summit, in a behind-the-scenes diplomatic effort by Australia.

World leaders including U.S. President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin also held the koalas backstage, the Herald Sun reported.

Mr. Obama was seen hugging a koala with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

After pledging to “shirtfront” Mr. Putin at the international talks (over the downing of Malaysia Airlines MH17 allegedly by pro-Russian separatists, which killed many Australians), Mr. Abbott put the differences briefly aside to introduce Mr. Putin to a couple of koalas.
