Minister for Forests and Environment Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan launched the Zero-Waste Campaign in the district on Friday.

At a simple ceremony, the Minister deposited a sack of plastic waste, collected from the municipal area, into a vehicle provided by the municipality. District Collector U.V. Jose, municipal councillors and others were present.

Varsity joins drive

Mahatma Gandhi University also joined the Zero-Waste Campaign and Environment Day celebrations by launching the Waste-Free Campus campaign and One Lakh Tree campaign. According to the university authorities, the One Lakh Tree Campaign envisages planting one lakh saplings on the campuses of the university and the colleges affiliated to it. Babu Sebastian, Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, said environmental issues should be taken up as part of the curriculum. He also stressed the need for effective awareness campaigns on the issues.
