Calicut University Vice Chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer has described the awards that reach deserving people, without being sought, as an emblem of real glory.

Inaugurating the 150th birthday celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi organised by the Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research at Calicut University on Tuesday, Dr. Basheer said that many people were rendering services today with well-defined objective of media publicity and awards in mind.

“Mahatma worked selflessly with no awards or laurels in mind. K.P. Jaisal, whose selfless act of turning himself as a footstep for others to board a boat during the recent floods in the State, would have made Gandhiji proud. The new generation should imbibe the Gandhian values not by speeches, but through sacrifices and good deeds,” he said.

The Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research felicitated Mr. Jaisal on the occasion. Dr. Basheer draped him with a gold-laced shawl.

A quiz on Gandhi was organised for students at the programme held in association with the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Calicut University Campus Higher Secondary School.

Hindi scholar R. Surendran presided. Gandhian R.S. Panikkar welcomed the gathering. P. Premarajan proposed a vote of thanks.
