Alathur: Youth power to the fore

In the long and chequered history of Alathur, the Congress-led UDF could defeat the CPI(M)-led LDF only once here, in 1991. Congress leader A.V. Gopinath, contesting this election from adjoining Nenmara, wrested the constituency with a slender margin after a tough fight then.

This time, the UDF has left the constituency for the Kerala Congress (M), which has fielded one of its young leaders K. Kusalakumar. However, the UDF circles say the chances are less for its candidate as the Kerala Congress (M) has a negligible presence in the locality.

Moreover, the organisational mechanism of the UDF is also very weak in this traditional Left stronghold.

The CPI(M) has chosen its youth leader K.D. Prasenan, who enjoys wide admiration in the locality.

He is a grandson of Alathur R. Krishnan, the Communist leader who represented the constituency for over 25 years.

In the last three elections, LDF candidates got elected with comfortable majorities.

The BJP has a negligible presence in the constituency.

The delimitation has in no way affected the clout of Left parties over the masses. The area is predominantly agricultural and irrigation water-related problems are key poll issues here.
