The Sree Narayana Dharma Parilapalana (SNDP) Yogam is all for a review of the existing reservation system in the country, Vellappally Natesan, general secretary of the organisation, has said.

Responding to the recent Supreme Court verdict on reservation to postgraduate or super speciality courses, Mr. Natesan said the Yogam never had the view that the reservation should continue for eternity.

Mr. Natesan demanded a fair and objective evaluation of the existing reservation system to find out whether the reservation communities got their due after the introduction of the system. If it was found that the reservation communities had got the desired protection and preferences, the system should be scrapped. If proved otherwise, the reservation should continue unchanged, he said.

When pointed out that RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat too had demanded a review of the reservation system some days go, Mr. Natesan said the Central government had clarified that the existing reservation policy would continue. Since those leading the Central government had come out with a position statement, the views expressed by Mr. Bhagwat need not be discussed further, he said.

The Yogam had serious apprehensions about the benefits available to the reservation communities. The reports of the Mandal Commission and Justice Narendran Commission proved that the communities got its due only with regard to class 3 and 4 employment alone. The communities were yet to get its share in the case of Class 1 employment. They had got only meagre representation in the all-India service, he said.

The Yogam had not discussed the issue in the upcoming poll. The proposed political party by bringing together the majority communities would discuss the question of reservation after its formation. The views expressed regarding the review were the views of the general secretary of the Yogam, he said.

BJP stance

BJP State president V. Muraleedharan said the Kerala unit of the party was yet to debate on the question of reservation as it was up to the Central government to decide on the subject. It was not a pressing issue before the State party, he said.
